Spam registrations dropped to nearly zero after enabling a good Q&A challenge.
The upgrade script is reliable but a backup costs you nothing.
Make sure you take both a files and a database backup before upgrading.

Do not forget to disable plugins before the upgrade.
The upgrade went smoothly for me, just re-check your templates afterwards.
